Astana Student Brutally Beaten, Suffers Broken Teeth in Schoolyard Brawl
A violent altercation between students in Astana escalated into a brutal assault, leaving one 8th-grader with broken teeth and a face covered in blood. The victim's mother has come forward to detail the harrowing incident and express her frustration over the perceived lack of action.
A Fight for a Friend
The incident involved students from a local Astana school and others from a different institution. According to the victim's mother, Ludmila, the conflict began on January 28th, initially not directly involving her son. The dispute reportedly stemmed from an argument between her son's friend and other students.
However, Ludmila states that the situation intensified when her son intervened to defend his friend. She claims the teenagers were targeted and harassed for several days leading up to the main incident.
"They argued with them for two days. They were being harassed for two days. My son was also being harassed individually – a video from the bus shows five people approaching and demanding he get off at a different stop," she recounted.
Brutal Attack with Brass Knuckles
On January 30th, after classes concluded, the two groups agreed to meet. Ludmila explained that the teenagers initially intended to resolve the conflict peacefully, seemingly to appease older students.
However, as they left school, approximately 10 individuals, including students from another school, were waiting near a fence. "According to the camera footage, they arrived – guys we didn't know. A fight immediately broke out. When the children saw they had brass knuckles, they started to run because they were outnumbered," the mother described.
Her son, attempting to flee last, was caught by one assailant while another struck him in the face with brass knuckles. The teenager lost consciousness and fell, after which he was further assaulted with kicks by three individuals.
"His friends saw this – when they looked back, he was covered in blood," she stated. Ludmila added that her son was unable to speak due to the severity of his injuries, with his teeth visibly loose.
Severe Injuries and Long Recovery
Ludmila detailed the extent of her son's injuries: "Two of his upper front teeth were knocked out by the root, three lower teeth were damaged and shattered. One tooth at the bottom was broken down to the gum line, his lip was pierced and lacerated, and his palate was injured, requiring surgery. The child was urgently hospitalized."
Throughout February and March, the student underwent extensive medical treatment, including surgeries to restore his teeth. He was fed through a tube for a month and was unable to attend school for approximately the same period.
Currently, the young victim requires long-term and costly orthodontic treatment, including braces and aligners, with potential future dental implants. He is expected to live without his front teeth for another 4-5 years.
Criminal Case Opened, But Progress Stalled?
Following the assault, an ambulance took the injured student to the hospital, while his father remained at the scene. The involved students, including those from the other school, were identified. Parents from both sides filed police reports the same day. A criminal case was initiated for causing moderate bodily harm.
Ludmila expressed distress over the investigation's pace, noting that while the perpetrators were registered at their respective schools, active investigative efforts seemed to stall in February. She mentioned that some of the teenagers involved have since changed schools or moved away, with their testimonies yet to be taken.
"The class teacher was the most supportive, helping with my son's studies while he was at home. But the school administration, in my view, seemed indifferent to the matter, perhaps wanting to conceal it to avoid a scandal. Yes, they were registered, but I don't see the impact: the children are continuing their studies," Ludmila stated.
Unsettling Remarks and Parental Concerns
According to the mother, only one of the attackers, the teenager who held her son, has been held accountable. His parents apologized but claimed their child had no recollection of the event. Ludmila also shared a disturbing comment made by the parents of another assailant to her husband: "Why are you making such a fuss? Your child wasn't killed."
She further criticized the investigator for a lack of proactivity, stating, "He says, 'Let the witnesses come.' I ask him to go and look, but he isn't doing his job." Ludmila highlighted that her family has taken significant steps themselves, gathering camera footage from the bus and the initial conflict site, as well as identifying witnesses who intervened.
Attackers Listed as Witnesses
Ludmila believes that the teenagers who allegedly carried out the attack are currently only listed as witnesses in the case, with no charges filed against them yet. She laments the delay in the investigation despite the available evidence.
"There are witnesses, there are camera recordings – showing how they came in a group to the children near the school and how the conflict started," she said. She provided some of the evidence to the news outlet.
The first video partially shows the fight behind a tree. Her son, wearing a light-colored jacket, is initially involved but is pulled away by friends when they notice the attackers have brass knuckles. The second recording captures the students fleeing, with her son being the last to run and pursued by several individuals.
A parked emergency vehicle near a museum reportedly blocked the camera's view after a turn, preventing the recording of the moment her son was caught and beaten.
