Drone Attack Sparks Fire at UAE's Barakah Nuclear Plant; Radiation Levels Normal
A fire broke out at the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates following a drone attack, officials confirmed. The incident occurred outside the plant's inner perimeter, affecting an electrical generator in the Al-Dhafra region.
Emergency Response and Safety Assurances
Emergency services from Abu Dhabi were quickly dispatched to the scene. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries resulting from the attack. The UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation stated that the fire did not compromise the plant's safety or its primary operational systems.
International Atomic Energy Agency Statement
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing UAE authorities, reported that radiation levels at the plant remained within normal limits after the incident. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed concern over the event, emphasizing that actions threatening nuclear safety are unacceptable.
Investigation and Diplomatic Response
UAE officials are currently investigating the origin of the drone attack and have asserted their right to respond to such "terrorist attacks." The President's diplomatic advisor described the situation as a dangerous escalation. This incident follows a prior announcement by the UAE Ministry of Defence on May 5th, stating their full readiness to counter missile and drone threats.
