Ex-Official Olga Abdygapparova Faces 8-Year Prison Sentence in Fraud Case
A significant legal proceeding is underway in Almaty, Kazakhstan, concerning former official Olga Abdygapparova. The Medeu District Court heard arguments in her case, where state prosecutors have requested an eight-year prison sentence.
Charges and Prosecution's Request
The prosecution has found Abdygapparova guilty on charges including fraud, abuse of power, and misappropriation of property. In addition to the requested eight-year jail term, prosecutors are also seeking to strip her of the right to hold certain positions for a period of 10 years.
Background of the Case
The criminal case is reportedly linked to the construction of the Esentai City residential complex in Almaty and the activities of the AV-Construction company. Investigators allege that violations occurred during Abdygapparova's tenure as head of the company. Notably, her husband, Almas Abdygapparov, was previously convicted in connection with this project.
Defense Arguments
Olga Abdygapparova has denied the charges against her. Her defense team argues that the company's financial difficulties predated her leadership, stemming from the period when the group led by Eldos Kospayev was in control. The lawyers also contend that some of the disputed issues are civil matters rather than criminal offenses.
Connection to Eldos Kospayev Case
Eldos Kospayev is identified as the leader of an organized criminal group accused of forcibly seizing businesses from entrepreneurs. His group allegedly used intimidation tactics to extort profits. A year ago, Kospayev and his associates were convicted for forming an organized criminal group, extortion, and illegal property acquisition, receiving various prison sentences. Eldos Kospayev himself was sentenced to 15 years.
