Kazakhstan is set to experience a dramatic shift in weather on June 7, with forecasters predicting thunderstorms and strong winds across numerous regions, alongside a significant heatwave reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius in some areas. The national weather agency, Kazhydromet, has issued a storm warning for several provinces and the major cities of Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent.
Regional Weather Breakdown
In the Abay region, residents can expect rain and thunderstorms in the western, northern, and eastern parts. Winds are forecast to reach speeds of 15-20 meters per second, with daytime temperatures soaring to 35°C in the southern areas. A high fire risk is in effect across the region, with an extreme risk in the northwest, south, and central parts.
The Akmola region will see light rain and thunderstorms overnight in the west, with short-term rain and thunderstorms expected during the day in the west, north, and east. Southwest winds will pick up, with gusts of 15-20 meters per second in the west and north. A high fire risk persists in the southern and eastern parts.
In the Almaty region, short-term rain and thunderstorms are forecast overnight in the southeast, with light rain and thunderstorms during the day in the north and south. Mountainous areas may experience short-term rain with thunderstorms. East and southeast winds will blow, with gusts up to 18 meters per second in the south, east, and mountainous areas. An extreme fire risk is present in the northern part of the region.
The Atyrau region anticipates rain with thunderstorms overnight and during the day in the western and northern parts. The west may experience heavy rain, hail, and a storm wind. Southwest winds will shift to the northwest, with gusts up to 15-20 meters per second in the western part during the day.
East Kazakhstan region is bracing for rain and thunderstorms in its western, northern, and eastern sections. Northwest and north winds will gust up to 15-20 meters per second during the day. High fire risk is noted in the northwest and central parts, with an extreme risk in the south.
In the West Kazakhstan region, rain and thunderstorms are possible, with heavy rain, hail, and storm winds expected in the southern and eastern parts during the day. Northwest winds will gust up to 15-20 meters per second in the western and southern parts. A high fire risk is present in the western area.
Major Cities Under Warning
Astana faces a high fire risk. Almaty will experience light rain with thunderstorms during the day, with mountainous areas in Medeu and Bostandyk districts expecting short-term rain and thunderstorms. Southeast winds will gust up to 18 meters per second.
Shymkent also has a high fire risk. Meanwhile, Semey in the Abay region will see rain with thunderstorms and northwesterly winds gusting up to 15-18 meters per second during the day.
