Kazakhstan Warns of New AI-Powered Scams Targeting Citizens

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a stern warning to citizens regarding a new wave of online scams that leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. These sophisticated schemes are designed to deceive individuals by mimicking trusted authorities and financial institutions.

How AI is Fueling Fraud

Criminals are employing AI to generate highly realistic video, audio, and visual content. This technology allows them to precisely imitate the appearance and voice of representatives from law enforcement agencies, banks, and other organizations. Victims may receive video calls from individuals posing as police officers, national security agents, or bank security personnel.

These fraudsters often claim to be investigating suspicious transactions or preventing potential theft of funds, pressuring recipients to urgently transfer money to so-called "safe accounts." To enhance their deception, scammers also distribute messages and documents that closely resemble official communications. They may utilize chatbots and automated services to create the illusion of interacting with genuine representatives of state bodies or financial institutions.

Official Guidance from the Ministry

The Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized that law enforcement officers and bank employees will never request money transfers via video calls, ask for confidential data, or suggest conducting financial operations over the phone. Such requests are definitive signs of a scam.

"To prevent fraud, we urge citizens to be cautious, not to follow instructions from unknown individuals regarding money transfers, not to disclose personal and banking details, and to verify any incoming information through official channels," stated Beybit Birzhanov, Head of the Department for Combating Cybercrime at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He added that any suspected fraudulent activity or attempts should be immediately reported to the police.
