Vandalism Damages $6 Million Flood Barrier in Shymkent Just Months After Completion
A significant portion of a newly constructed flood control barrier along the Badam River in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, has been severely damaged by unknown individuals, just months after its completion. The incident has raised questions about the integrity of the 2.7 billion tenge (approximately $6 million USD) project.
Destruction of Concrete Barrier
Approximately 40 meters of the concrete barrier, designed to reinforce the riverbanks, was found to be destroyed. The damage occurred only a few months after the coastal reinforcement works were finalized. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
Cause of Damage Identified
According to the Shymkent City Department for the Development of a Comfortable Urban Environment, the destruction was caused by individuals illegally extracting stone directly from the riverbed. This unauthorized activity led to the damage of the hydraulic structure.
No Immediate Flood Risk
Despite the damage, the situation along the river is reported to be stable, and there is no immediate risk of flooding in nearby areas. Law enforcement agencies are actively working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the vandalism.
A Costly Flood Prevention Project
The coastal reinforcement project, which involved strengthening 5.3 kilometers of the Badam River's banks, was completed in December of the previous year. The initiative included riverbed leveling, concrete lining of slopes, and reinforcement of hydraulic structures in the settlements of Igilik, Zhanatalap, and Kokbulak.
The project was funded with 2.7 billion tenge from the state budget, with expectations that the upgraded barrier would significantly reduce the risk of flooding. The contractor responsible for the construction is obligated to repair the damaged section at their own expense, as the facility is still within its seven-year warranty period.
