In New York, a quarter-century after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the identity of another victim has been established. For the first time, forensic genetic genealogy was used, reports infohub.kz.
The adult woman became the 1,654th victim of the World Trade Center to be officially identified. The victim's family has chosen not to publicly disclose her name.
The new method combines DNA analysis with family tree research. Previously, such technology had not been used to identify victims of the 9/11 attacks.
"This is a breakthrough. For the first time in 25 years, we have applied new methods to the identification work for World Trade Center victims," said New York City's chief medical examiner, Jason Graham.
Forensic anthropologist Jennifer Odien noted that there are currently 47 DNA profiles that could potentially be identified using genetic genealogy.
In total, a quarter-century after the attacks, about 1,100 victims of the World Trade Center remain unidentified.
"The ability to apply new developments to this work is an important way to continue fulfilling our commitment to families," Graham emphasized.
