An artificial intelligence-designed drug has for the first time shown it can slow biological aging in humans, reports infohub.kz.

The medication, called rentosertib, was developed by biotech company Insilico Medicine using AI. Initially intended for patients with chronic lung disease, it successfully reduced key biological markers of age in a small study. The results were published in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

The 12-week trial involved 42 participants. Scientists assessed their condition using six different versions of so-called "aging clocks," which analyze protein levels, DNA state, and other biomarkers. In patients taking the drug, biological age decreased, while in the placebo group it remained unchanged or increased.

Despite the promising results, experts urge caution, as the concept of "aging clocks" is debated in the medical community. The accuracy of such diagnostics is not yet universally accepted, and the drug itself must undergo a long series of clinical trials before receiving official approval.
