The commissioning of Almaty CHPP-2, which is being converted from coal to gas, has been delayed: the modernization and adjustment of the plant were initially planned to be completed by September 30, 2026, but the Ministry of Energy, after a visit to the site by the head of the department, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, announced different dates, reports infohub.kz.
Converting CHPP-2 from coal to gas will reduce harmful emissions from the plant by up to 90%. According to the Ministry of Energy's press service, as of September 19, the facility was 93.75% complete. Work had fallen behind schedule, but the gap has now been closed. Commissioning work is already underway at the plant.
The preliminary launch of the main generating equipment is scheduled for October 15. The plant is planned to be fully commissioned by the end of December 2026.
The situation at CHPP-3 is different: its work is seriously behind schedule. As of today, the plant is 27% complete. The site employs 809 people and 70 pieces of equipment.
"The pace of work at CHPP-3 is causing serious complaints. Excuses about logistical difficulties are not accepted; these issues should have been resolved in advance. The contractor must urgently resolve equipment supply problems, strengthen shifts with specialists, and catch up with the approved schedule. The deadlines for commissioning the plant will not be revised, and the management of the companies will be held personally accountable," said Yerlan Akkenzhenov.
