Police in Almaty have detained a man suspected of stalking his former girlfriend: after the breakup he persistently sought meetings with the woman, showed up at her home and workplace, called from hidden numbers and threatened her with physical violence, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the city police department, the woman turned to law enforcement after receiving persistent messages and threats of physical violence. She said the man had refused to accept the end of their relationship, continuing to call, send messages and press for in-person meetings. She then sought help from the police.
“A criminal case has been opened over the fact of unlawful stalking,” the department said in a statement.
Investigators have seized screenshots of the correspondence and added them to the case file. The suspect has admitted guilt for unlawful stalking. He has been detained and placed in a temporary detention facility.
Police stressed that stalking has nothing to do with showing affection. Persistent attempts to contact a person against their will and systematic interference in their private life can carry criminal liability.
Law enforcement urged Kazakhstanis not to ignore threats and to seek help from the police if they encounter stalking.
