April 29 brings together several international observances and significant historical events. International Dance Day, International Day of Immunology, and the Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare are marked on this date, while Kazakhstan has seen landmark events over the years, reports infohub.kz.
International Dance Day was established in 1982 at the initiative of the UNESCO International Dance Council. The date honors the birthday of French ballet master, theorist, and reformer Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), known as the "father of modern ballet." The proposal was made by educator and choreographer Pyotr Gusev.
International Day of Immunology is observed at the initiative of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) and the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS). First celebrated at the European level in 2005, it became international in 2007. Its main goal is to highlight the importance of immunology in fighting infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancer, and to unite specialists from different countries to exchange expertise.
Day of Remembrance for All Victims of Chemical Warfare was established in November 2005. The date marks the entry into force on April 29, 1997, of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction.
In 1911, a powerful oil gusher was struck at the Dossor oil field, developed by British entrepreneurs. The well flowed for 30 hours, producing 16,700 poods of oil.
In 1936, the first issue of the newspaper "Vecherny Almaty" (formerly "Sotsialisticheskaya Alma-Ata" and "Vechernyaya Alma-Ata") was published. The paper covered economics, urban economy, culture, medicine, education, and upbringing, as well as entertainment and educational topics such as sports, crosswords, horoscopes, and jokes.
In 1940, the Kazakh State Academic Drama Theater premiered Gabit Musrepov's play "Kozy Korpesh — Bayan Sulu."
In 1992, Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey Suleyman Demirel arrived in Almaty on an official visit. The Turkish Embassy in Kazakhstan was ceremonially opened.
In 2002, the National Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan was established. Its goals include developing proposals on key state affairs, increasing the accountability of government bodies to the people, and defining main directions of domestic and foreign policy through broad discussion with civil society.
In 2006, a memorial museum of academician Akhmet Zhubanov, an outstanding figure in Kazakhstan's musical culture, composer, and author of books on Kazakh folk music, opened in Almaty.
In 2011, the film "Farewell, Gulsary!" by director Ardak Amirkulov, based on Chingiz Aitmatov's novel, received a special jury prize at the first International Iranian Film Festival held on Kish Island.
That same year, a memorial plaque was unveiled in Almaty to People's Artist of the USSR, People's Hero of Kazakhstan, and director of the M. Auezov Kazakh Academic Drama Theater, Azerbaijan Mambetov (1932–2009). The plaque was placed on the house where the cultural figure lived.
In 2013, the film "Harmony Lessons" received a special jury diploma for best directorial debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Earlier, the film became the first Kazakhstani film in the main competition of the Berlinale 2013, winning the Silver Bear for cinematography by Aziz Zhambakiyev, the Morgen Post newspaper prize, and positive reviews from critics.
In 2017, Kazakhstan published its first national report on combating corruption. The document includes an overview of legislative measures adopted, analysis of problems, and proposals for solutions.
That same year, the founding summit of the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) was held at Tsinghua University in Beijing, with Nazarbayev University joining. Fifteen universities from Thailand, Hong Kong, China, India, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan also joined the alliance.
In 2018, in Pesaro, Italy, the state trio "Forte Trio" and the folk ensemble "Astana Sazy" (Kazakhconcert) won first place in the "Folk Performance" category at the 15th International G. Rossini Music Competition. The Italian audience heard kuis by Kurmangazy, Ketbuga, Ykylas, D. Nurpeisova, and S. Turysbek performed by A. Ormanbek, N. Yakiyaev, and A. Omarov on kobyz and dombra. The musicians received a special G. Rossini prize.
In 2019, the first meeting of the Association of Military Educational Institutions of CIS Countries was held at the National Defense University in Astana. The association was created on Kazakhstan's initiative to develop cooperation in military education, coordinate the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel, and their retraining and advanced training.
In 2021, the official opening of Kazakhstan's consulate general took place in Samarkand. Samarkand region governor E. Turdimov called the event historically significant and in line with the course of expanding strategic partnership between the two countries.
In 2022, a monument to the great Kazakh poet and thinker Abai was unveiled in Tbilisi. The ceremony marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Georgia. Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in Georgia Giorgi Jakhutashvili was awarded the jubilee medal "30 Years of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan," and the monument's author, Georgian sculptor Jumber Jikia, received a letter of thanks from the Kazakh embassy.
That same year, commemorative envelopes were issued in Beijing for the 150th anniversary of Akhmet Baitursynov and the 100th anniversary of Roza Baglanova. One envelope features the educator and public figure Akhmet Baitursynov, and the other features the legendary singer Roza Baglanova.
