A video showing an attack on an elderly man outside an apartment building entrance in Astana is circulating on social media. The incident drew a response from the capital's Police Department, infohub.kz reports.
The footage, published by the Instagram page Astanovka98, shows an unidentified man walking out of the entrance, approaching an elderly man sitting on a bench and beginning to strike him. According to the video, a woman passing by appears to try to defend the pensioner, after which the assailant turns his attention to her and runs after her.
According to the press service of the Astana Police Department, a criminal case has been opened over the incident. The suspect has been detained and placed in a temporary detention facility.
"It has been established that a 28-year-old man in a state of alcohol intoxication, while leaving the entrance, inflicted bodily injuries on an elderly man. In addition, he struck a 41-year-old woman who tried to defend the victim," police said.
Police remind that any manifestations of violence, rudeness and aggression toward citizens are unacceptable and entail liability established by law.
