A bread price of up to 700 tenge has shocked residents of the Mangystau region. A video from a local store is going viral on social media, showing customers outraged by the sharp increase in the price of this staple product — from 320 to 420 tenge and higher, reports infohub.kz.
In the video, a local woman expresses outrage that the bread price rose overnight. She urges authorities to investigate and criticizes them for insufficient control over prices of socially significant goods.
“Why aren’t you watching these things? They’ve jacked up the price of bread, look at this price! They don’t even want to talk to me properly, I don’t want to go in. The bread that we used to buy for 320 tenge is now 420 tenge!” the woman said.
Social media users joined the wave of discontent. Kazakhs wonder how a staple product can cost so much.
“Is this somewhere in an elite restaurant? Where do these outrageous prices come from, especially for a staple?” wrote user bassbosted666.
Other commenters urged not to mislead people, saying the prices shown were from a private bakery, which is free to set its own prices.
“This is a private bakery, social bread is twice as cheap and sold everywhere!” user kacorio_92 assured.
