Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to launch a new electric hatchback, the Great Seagull, which will slot between the Seagull and Dolphin models. The new model has already been spotted on Chinese roads: it features larger dimensions, a lidar, and a more spacious interior, according to infohub.kz.
The Great Seagull has a closed front end with geometric lines and distinctive light clusters. A new body color, Ink Green, is also available for the model.
The hatchback measures 4205×1810×1570 mm, with a wheelbase of 2650 mm. That's 150 mm longer than the current Seagull's wheelbase, while overall length has increased by 425 mm. In size, the Great Seagull is approaching the BYD Dolphin.
A lidar is visible on the roof, indicating the use of the God's Eye B (DiPilot 300) driver assistance system. It is expected to support autonomous navigation in city and highway conditions, automated parking, traffic light recognition, and automatic lane changes.
Inside, there is no traditional instrument panel – instead, an enlarged central screen is installed. A simplified two-spoke steering wheel and a spacious center console are also featured.
The Great Seagull is powered by a 95 kW (127 hp) electric motor and FinDreams lithium iron phosphate batteries with capacities of 30 or 39.2 kWh. Range is 320–420 km on the CLTC cycle, or 259–340 km on WLTP. Top speed is 150 km/h.
The new hatchback will be a more equipped alternative to the regular Seagull, which is priced from 70,000 yuan (about 4.7 million tenge) in China.
Earlier, Kursiv Auto reported that BYD had initiated a recall campaign for the Shark 6 model due to the risk of the spare tire detaching.
