General Motors is considering producing a new compact crossover at its Korean division. According to South Korean portal Daum.net, GM Korea’s plants are highly likely to become the production site for successors to the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Trax, reports infohub.kz.
According to Viva100, the new model is already in development under the internal code 9BXX-2. The last digit indicates a new generation rather than a facelift. The design, platform, and key technical solutions are nearly finalized. A final decision on the production location is expected in the third quarter of 2027.
If approved, production of the crossover will begin at the Bupyeong plant in the third quarter of 2029. Later, at the end of 2031, manufacturing will also start at the Changwon facility.
Indirect confirmation of the plans came from the appearance of the new model’s code in GM Korea’s collective agreement with the union. According to media reports, such details are not included in the document without approval from the company’s headquarters.
It was previously reported that due to U.S. tariffs, General Motors might move production to other countries. However, sources now say that Korean plants remain key due to high product quality and competitive costs.
Recent investments further underscore the company’s commitment to developing its Korean plants. Earlier this year, GM announced investments of nearly 8.8 billion won (about 2.9 billion tenge). Meanwhile, the plants are upgrading production lines, installing new equipment, and expanding energy infrastructure.
