Britain's Collins English Dictionary has named "mogging" its word of the year for 2026 — a term that emerged from bodybuilding culture and has since spread across social media, infohub.kz reports.
The word describes a situation in which someone outshines another person or thing, appearing more attractive, confident or higher in status by comparison.
The term originated in bodybuilding culture and is thought to be a shortening of AMOG (alpha male of the group). Around 2016 it was used as a noun to describe the most physically developed man in a gym. It later became a verb and spread through online communities.
Today "mogging" is used in a wide range of contexts: when teenagers outperform professional athletes, when a new video game eclipses an older one, or when someone's home baking looks better than someone else's. In most cases the term is used ironically, according to Collins.
