The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10 has exceeded 200, according to infohub.kz.
According to CNN, the number of fatalities has risen to at least 224. The country's geological service has recorded more than 70 aftershocks following the main quake of magnitude 7.4. Rescuers continue to clear debris in the hardest-hit areas, trying to reach people trapped under the rubble.
The U.S. State Department has announced it is sending a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to Colombia to support critical operations and coordinate with the government in the emergency response. The Mexican government is also preparing to send 255 military personnel specializing in search and rescue, as well as humanitarian aid.
As previously reported, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck Colombia on August 10. That evening, 30 deaths were reported, and by the morning of August 11, the death toll had reached 132, with 570 injured. The government declared a national state of emergency and deployed military personnel to the affected areas. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev sent a telegram of condolences to the President of Colombia over the numerous casualties.
