American magazine Consumer Reports compared 2026 model-year compact cars and identified five models whose overall scores came in higher than the Subaru Impreza. The list includes the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, Mazda3, and two versions of the Toyota Prius, according to infohub.kz.
In Consumer Reports' 2026 rankings, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid and Honda Civic Hybrid each scored 78 points, while the Subaru Impreza received 75. In road tests, the Elantra earned 83 points — eight more than the Subaru. The Hyundai hybrid's fuel economy in testing came in at 48 miles per gallon, versus 29 for the Impreza.
At the same time, the Subaru earned higher marks for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. The Elantra Hybrid is equipped with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. Combined output is 139 horsepower, with front-wheel drive. The Blue trim starts at $26,900 in the U.S. (about 11.8 million tenge).
The Honda Civic Hybrid also scored 78 points. In road tests, the model received 83 points, and its fuel economy came in at 44 miles per gallon. That is notably better than the Subaru's. The Impreza, however, beat the Civic Hybrid on predicted reliability. The base Civic Sport Hybrid starts at $30,700 in the U.S. (nearly 13.5 million tenge).
The Mazda3 scored 77 points and took third place. The Subaru edged out the Mazda slightly on owner satisfaction and predicted reliability. The Mazda3 is offered in sedan and hatchback body styles. It is available with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine producing 186 horsepower and a turbocharged version rated at 250 horsepower. Pricing starts at $25,900 (about 11.4 million tenge).
The list also includes the Toyota Prius and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Both models scored 76 points — one more than the Subaru Impreza. The standard Prius posted higher fuel economy, while both Toyotas trailed the Subaru on predicted reliability. The standard Prius starts at $28,500 in the U.S. (about 12.5 million tenge), and the plug-in hybrid at $35,000 (about 15.4 million tenge).
Consumer Reports' overall score takes into account road-test results, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, the availability of safety systems, and crash-test results.
