Leaving a smartphone or other portable gadget charging overnight can lead to a fire. A worn cable, a defective battery or a failed power adapter often causes a short circuit, which is followed by ignition. The website infohub.kz examines the basic electrical safety measures that help prevent such incidents.

The risk increases many times over with hidden battery defects, a damaged cable or a broken power supply unit. With such faults, electronics are prone to excessive heating, which triggers a short circuit and the appearance of open flame.

It is critically important to choose the right surface for placing connected devices. The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan stresses that smartphones and other devices do not belong on a bed, sofa cushions, mattresses or under a blanket. Soft furniture and textiles block normal cooling, causing dangerous overheating. Experts also warn against plugging devices in overnight: during sleep a person is unable to react quickly to the first signs of a malfunction.

A malfunction is usually signaled by abnormally high temperatures on the body of the gadget, the power adapter, the plug or the socket itself. Sparks, the characteristic smell of burning rubber or smoldering plastic, traces of soot and crackling sounds should also raise alarm. A swollen battery or warped casing parts are a clear cause for concern. Connecting deformed or malfunctioning equipment to the power grid is strictly prohibited.

Representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan emphasize that only hard surfaces with natural ventilation are suitable for recharging tablets, phones and other devices. Once charging is complete, the adapter should be unplugged immediately. In the event of ignition, protecting people becomes the top priority. If the situation allows and there is no direct threat, the device must be quickly disconnected from power, after which firefighters should be called on 101 or 112 and others helped to leave the smoke-filled area.

Attempts to extinguish the flames yourself are justified only in the first seconds after ignition and only if you are fully confident it is safe for your life. As soon as the risk increases, you should evacuate immediately and wait outside for fire crews to arrive.
