A boat carrying migrants capsized and sank in the Libyan Sea south of the Greek island of Gavdos, with at least 77 people on board. Authorities said 52 people were rescued, at least 25 remain missing, one person was found unconscious, and one death has been confirmed, according to infohub.kz.
The rescue operation involves several vessels from the Greek coast guard and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), as well as a helicopter from the Greek Air Force and a Frontex aircraft. Search and rescue efforts are continuing south of Gavdos.
Greek authorities have not provided information on the specific type of vessel that sank or the nationalities of those on board.
Gavdos is Greece's southernmost inhabited island, located south of Crete in the Libyan Sea. The waters south of the island have become a key route for migrant boats heading to Greece from North Africa.
