A passenger ship carrying at least 240 people has lost contact in the Java Sea in Indonesia. The crew has not been in communication since Saturday, according to infohub.kz.
The vessel Virgo Transport 8 was traveling from Surabaya — Indonesia's second-largest city, located in East Java province — to South Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. According to the search and rescue service in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province, a communications failure occurred aboard the ship.
The vessel's last known position was recorded in the Java Sea, roughly 148 kilometers (92 miles) from the pier in Banjarmasin. Officials say 241 passengers were on board. No casualties have been reported so far.
Authorities said the ship's operator reported the incident after receiving information that the vessel had encountered severe weather.
