Syrian state TV reported that Israeli military aircraft struck an airbase in the country's northwest on Tuesday morning, causing material damage but no casualties. This was reported by infohub.kz.
According to state TV, eight strikes hit the runway of the Abu Duhur airbase in Idlib province. No further details were given. The Israeli military did not comment on the attack. Turkish officials also did not respond immediately.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a war monitor, said that foreign fighters used to stay at the base but were recently asked to leave. The Observatory noted that Turkey, a main backer of Syria's government, has been rehabilitating the airbase that had been out of service for years during Syria's conflict, which left nearly half a million people dead.
Since the fall of Bashar Assad's government in December 2024, when insurgents marched into Damascus, tensions between Israel and Turkey over Syria have been rising. After Assad's fall, Israel carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, mainly destroying Syrian army assets to keep them out of the hands of his successors.
Last year, an Israeli drone strike on a southern suburb of Damascus killed eight soldiers and wounded others. The new authorities in Damascus have said they do not want a conflict with Israel, but Israel remains suspicious of the government led by former Islamist insurgents.
