Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said she is ready to suspend the Schengen Agreement with Spain over the border breach in Ceuta, according to infohub.kz.
On social media platform X, Meloni wrote that the Italian government is ready to take emergency measures to protect national borders. She said the images from Ceuta are shocking and once again prove that uncontrolled illegal immigration is a direct threat to the security of European borders.
"The images from Ceuta are shocking and show once again that uncontrolled illegal immigration is a concrete threat to the security of Europe's borders. I have met with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. Italy will not stand idle. We are convening the relevant authorities, and after these meetings we are ready to intervene, including through emergency measures to protect our borders and ensure the safety of our citizens, such as suspending the Schengen area with Spain. We will not back down an inch on illegal immigration: protecting our borders, cracking down on human traffickers and ensuring effective repatriation will remain the policy of this government," Meloni said.
Recall that on the night of July 30-31, thousands of Moroccan migrants breached the border in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa. The Spanish authorities mobilized the army.
