The mansion of former National Security Committee chairman Karim Massimov, convicted of high treason, has a new balance holder in Astana: after failed auctions, the property was handed to the Analysis and Information Center under the Information Committee, and the house is now set to accommodate staff of that agency, infohub.kz reports.

The luxury property is located in the Karaotkel district, at 1 Yereimentau Street. In September 2025, the Company for the Management of Returned Assets transferred this mansion and other Massimov property to republican ownership under a gift agreement. At the time, the house was assigned to the National Scientific and Practical Center for the Development of Special and Inclusive Education under the Ministry of Education. The company explained that a ready-built house with a plot would avoid construction costs and allow the returned asset to be used for social purposes more quickly.

However, in 2026 the mansion was transferred to the Analysis and Information Center of the Information Committee of the Ministry of Culture and Information. The Ministry of Finance cited an order dated May 8 and an approval dated July 20. The reason for the transfer was not given in a response to an official request from Kursiv.

The new balance holder confirmed it had received the house for office use. "The facility has been transferred for further use as an office building to accommodate employees of the AIC after the necessary documents are processed and the facility is brought into line with its planned designated purpose," the Committee for State Property and Privatization of the Ministry of Finance said.

The agencies did not specify what work would be required or how much it would cost. They also did not say whether employees had already moved into Massimov's former home. The future of the mansion remains unknown. "The facility is currently on the balance sheet of the AIC. No decisions have been made on its sale or transfer to another person," the committee's response said.

The mansion had previously been put up for sale twice with a starting price of 1.8 billion tenge, but no one bid at the auctions. It was later listed again with a price cut of 282 million tenge, to about 1.6 billion. There was also an idea to transfer it to Astana for social needs. However, the capital's education department refused the house due to non-compliance with sanitary standards. After that, the mansion was handed to the center for the development of special and inclusive education. At the time, the Company for the Management of Returned Assets linked that decision to state priorities in social support.

Karim Massimov is a former prime minister of Kazakhstan and ex-chairman of the National Security Committee. In April 2023, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison with confiscation of property and a lifetime ban on holding public office. He was found guilty of high treason, forcible seizure of power and abuse of office.
