Police on the Thai island of Phuket detained a 24-year-old Kazakh citizen wanted internationally, arresting him right in his bed, a fact confirmed by Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, infohub.kz reports.

According to the Thai publication The Phuket News, the 24-year-old Kazakh citizen, suspected of ties to a transnational fraud group and of money laundering, was arrested on the island of Phuket in Thailand.

The man had also overstayed his Thai visa by more than 185 days, the report notes.

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told a NUR.KZ correspondent that local law enforcement on Phuket, acting through Interpol, detained a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan who was wanted internationally.

The detention was carried out on the basis of a request from the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan.

"The issue of extraditing the detainee to Kazakhstan is being worked out jointly with the authorized agencies in accordance with the established procedure," the foreign ministry added.
