Police in Karaganda have detained a suspect in a gold jewelry fraud, reports infohub.kz.

According to the press service of the Akmola Regional Police Department, in the Akkol district, officers of the criminal police department uncovered a fraud involving gold jewelry worth over 1.5 million tenge. The suspect, who allegedly tried to convince a seller that he had paid for the purchase, was detained in Karaganda.

As law enforcement established, the man came to a jewelry store and selected two gold chains with pendants. The seller issued an invoice through a banking app. The buyer showed that he had supposedly made the payment, after which he took the jewelry.

However, it soon turned out that the money never reached the seller's account. The woman immediately reported the incident to the police.

Criminal police officers reviewed CCTV footage and identified the suspect: a 34-year-old resident of the Shortandy district. After the incident, the man fled.

During further investigation, police found that this might not be an isolated case. According to preliminary data, the suspect is linked to similar frauds in the Almaty and Karaganda regions. The total damage from the confirmed cases amounts to about 15 million tenge.

As a result of operational search measures, the suspect was detained in Karaganda. Currently, police are establishing all circumstances of the incident and checking his involvement in other similar crimes.

Measures are also being taken to return the stolen gold jewelry to the victim.

Following the investigation, an appropriate procedural decision will be made.
