Kazakhstan's Supreme Audit Chamber has launched a state audit of the republic's Ministry of Defense, infohub.kz reports.
Specialists will assess how effectively the ministry uses budget funds, the chamber said in its Telegram channel.
The audit will also cover the material and technical supply of military units. No results have been reported yet.
Earlier, Kazakh President Qasym-Jomart Toqaev established a commission for a comprehensive inspection of the Ministry of Defense, headed by Deputy Chair of the Security Council Aida Balaeva.
The head of state previously dismissed Defense Minister Dauran Kosanov, and Aidos Myrzakhmetov took over the ministry.
The personnel changes and mass inspections at the Defense Ministry began after a tragedy in the Mangystau Region, where 17 servicemen were swept into the Caspian Sea during exercises, and 14 of them died. A separate government commission led by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbaev is investigating the circumstances of the tragedy.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote that five officers of Kazakhstan's Defense Ministry were detained in the case of the sailors' deaths. The criminal case, opened under articles on negligence and violation of navigation rules, is under special supervision of the Prosecutor General's Office.
September 25 was declared a day of national mourning.
The day before, families of the deceased were given telegrams with condolences from the president. On September 27, Qasym-Jomart Toqaev posthumously awarded the deceased sailors the Orders of Aibyn, 2nd Class, named after Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, and Aibyn, 3rd Class, named after Rakhimzhan Koshkarbaev. He also honored three surviving servicemen with the Medal for Courage.
