In Kazakhstan, a man is suspected of a series of frauds under the guise of a fake iPhone win. According to police, he illegally obtained the client database of the company where he previously worked and used it to deceive citizens, reports infohub.kz.
As reported by the police department of Akmola region, two victims have been identified so far: a resident of Burabay district in Akmola region and a female resident of Almaty region. However, police do not rule out that the number of deceived may be significantly higher.
During the investigation, it was found that a 33-year-old resident of Zhetysu region previously worked at a limited liability company officially engaged in the sale and delivery of goods. After being dismissed, he illegally obtained the company's client database and began contacting citizens who had previously purchased goods there.
The fraudster told clients that they had supposedly won an iPhone in a giveaway. To receive the "prize," they had to pay for its delivery in the amount of 55,000 tenge. Since the victims had indeed used the company's services before, the calls and information about the win did not raise suspicion. Trusting the caller, citizens transferred the specified amount to the provided bank details.
Currently, an investigation is underway to establish all circumstances of the incident, as well as possible additional episodes of the suspect's illegal activity.
