The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan has approved amendments to the order regulating the forms and samples of state registration plates. Residents will see the first changes in late July, reports infohub.kz.

The innovations cover two areas: letter series of license plates and digital region codes.

Key changes affect owners of motorcycles and trailers registered to legal entities with foreign participation, foreign citizens, and stateless persons. Previously, only series N and F were available for such vehicles; now the list has been expanded to six: N, F, G, I, J, and K.

This applies to state registration plates of types 3D (motorcycles) and 5D and 5DA (trailers and semi-trailers). In all cases, the previous two series have been replaced by six.

The expansion is due to the gradual exhaustion of existing letter and number combinations as the number of registered vehicles increases.

The changes do not affect passenger cars and trucks of foreign companies and foreign citizens — series F remains unchanged. The new letter series apply only to motorcycles, scooters, trailers, and semi-trailers.

Another change affects all vehicle owners in the country. In 2022, after the formation of the Abai, Zhetysu, and Ulytau regions, codes 18, 19, and 20 were assigned to them. However, in the appendix to the Interior Ministry order, these numbers remained reserved and were not officially tied to the regions.

That gap has now been closed. The new version of the document explicitly states that code 18 corresponds to Abai region, 19 to Zhetysu region, and 20 to Ulytau region.

Additionally, the Interior Ministry updated the order's terminology. The previously used word "foreigners" has been replaced with "foreign citizens" to align with current legislation.

Responsibility for implementing the order has been assigned to the deputy interior minister overseeing the area. The Administrative Police Committee must ensure the document's state registration and official publication.
