Juliana Avila Sauda, 20, the daughter of the son of Colombia's vice president, died after taking part in a half-marathon in Medellin — her heart stopped three times during the race, infohub.kz reports.

The young woman lost consciousness on the course on September 6. Medics performed resuscitation three times before she was taken to hospital.

"I express my deep condolences to the family of Juliana Avila, to our vice president, to his son Julian and to all their loved ones over this painful and unexpected loss," President Abelardo de la Espriella said.

The tragedy occurred during the Medellin Marathon, which drew more than 30,000 participants. During the race, 20-year-old biomedical engineering student Juliana Avila Sauda suddenly lost consciousness on the course.

She was rushed to Medellin's main hospital, where medics managed to revive her three times after cardiac arrests, but she died the following day. Local authorities noted that the exact forensic cause of death has not yet been established, and that this case has become the fourth fatality at these competitions in the past eight years.
