Lithuanian authorities have developed a detailed plan for evacuating the population in the event of a military threat or a serious crisis. Civilians are to be evacuated to Poland, according to infohub.kz.
Of the three main evacuation routes for residents of the capital, Vilnius, one leads toward the border with Poland. The other routes head north and west. Authorities in Poland's Podlaskie Voivodeship are working to prepare the region to serve as a transit corridor for residents of the Baltic states.
The Lithuanian plan stipulates that the process and order of evacuation should depend primarily on the location and scale of the threat.
"The country's authorities presented an updated plan a year ago, according to which one of the evacuation routes from the capital should be Poland. The other routes lead north and west. Evacuation should begin before an immediate threat arises. Vilnius residents should not expect to leave the city via one of the evacuation routes during shelling," said Žygimantas Solovjovas, a representative of the Civil Protection Department of the Vilnius City Municipality.
In that case, it is necessary to take shelter. The department said one of the reasons for preparing this plan was the desire to accustom residents to the idea that evacuation should be a controlled process.
The publication notes that the decision to include the Podlaskie Voivodeship in the Baltic states' evacuation system is a direct response by Poland's Ministry of Internal Affairs and administration to the armed conflict that has been ongoing for several years near Poland's eastern border and the real risk of escalation.
Recall that on September 11, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov explained under what circumstances Lithuania's territory would come under the targeting of nuclear weapons.
