Kylian Mbappé has become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. In the third-place match against England, the French striker scored a brace to bring his total to 22 goals in World Cups, reports infohub.kz.
Mbappé now leads Lionel Messi by one goal, with Messi set to play in the final against Spain. Besides the all-time record, the forward finished the 2026 World Cup with 10 goals, virtually securing the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer. Messi has eight goals before the final, so the Argentine still has a mathematical chance to catch up.
Despite the personal milestone, Mbappé admitted he would have traded it for a place in the final. France had hoped to reach a third consecutive World Cup final but lost to Spain in the semifinals.
Mbappé, who also won the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, could become the first player in history to win the award twice. His 10 goals in this tournament are the third-best single-tournament tally. The record is still held by Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup. Second is Hungary's Sándor Kocsis with 11 goals in 1954. Gerd Müller (1970) and now Mbappé have also scored 10 goals in a single World Cup.
According to media reports, the French Football Federation could announce the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as the new head coach of the national team in the coming days.
