Researchers in Thailand have discovered a previously unknown species of lizard and named it after one of the most recognizable she-dragons from George R.R. Martin's universe. The new species has been named Acanthosaura syrax, in honor of the dragon Syrax, which Rhaenyra Targaryen rode in the series 'House of the Dragon'. Details are reported by the website infohub.kz.
The new species was found in the highland evergreen forests of Mae Wong National Park, located in western Thailand. The lizard belongs to the group of so-called mountain horned dragons — small agamid lizards with spiny crests on their heads, necks, and backs.
According to the study's authors, the choice of name was not accidental. Like the dragon Syrax, the new lizard is distinguished by its yellow-green coloration, relatively small size, and unusually large egg clutches.
The scientists note that Acanthosaura syrax is found only in one area of Thailand, at elevations above 1,300 meters above sea level. DNA analysis confirmed that it is a distinct species, differing from its closest relatives.
Due to its very limited range, the researchers consider the new lizard vulnerable. They hope that the unusual name will help draw attention to the conservation of Thailand's highland forests and their rare inhabitants.
