The silhouettes of the destroyed Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were recreated in the sky over New York: a memorial show of 2,977 glowing drones took place on Wednesday evening to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, infohub.kz reports.
According to BBC, citing the organizers, the installation was titled "2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor." It is a public art project created in collaboration with artists, producers, and members of the community that lived through the September 11 attacks — families of the victims, survivors, and emergency responders.
According to NDTV, the 2,977 drones rose over the Hudson River, gradually converging to recreate the outline of the Twin Towers at full architectural scale. Each light symbolized one of those killed on September 11. The devices first spiraled up into the night sky and then formed the shape of the destroyed World Trade Center.
"The goal of the '2,977 Lights' project is to honor the memory of the victims and the memory of the events of September 11. We light exactly as many lights as needed to bear witness to each individual life," said Addison Mehr, creative director and executive producer of the project.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 suicide terrorists hijacked four passenger planes in the United States, two of which crashed into the high-rise towers of the World Trade Center. A third struck the Pentagon, and a fourth went down near the town of Shanksville in Pennsylvania. A total of 2,977 people died, and another 24 remain missing.
Recall that it recently became known that the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks and three of his accomplices held at Guantanamo Bay will finally face trial in 2028.
