A medical worker at a college dormitory in Petropavlovsk has been held administratively liable after ringworm was detected in 14 students at the same time, the website infohub.kz reports.

All those infected lived on the same floor of the dormitory, had close household contact and broke out in the characteristic red patches almost simultaneously.

An investigation found that the source of the infection was one of the students, who had come into contact with an infected animal. The spread of the disease is attributed to the medic's failure to conduct timely examinations of the students who had arrived from rural areas.

Specialists stressed that ringworm, while highly contagious, is fairly easy to treat if patients see a doctor promptly.

"The medical worker at the college dormitory was fined for failing to conduct medical examinations on time. The fine was imposed as an administrative penalty in the amount of 43,250 tenge," said Anara Kurgunbayeva, head of the city department of the sanitary and epidemiological control authority.

Recall that the outbreak of ringworm among college students became known in September of this year.
