Just two weeks after the death of Norway's King Harald V, his sister Princess Astrid has passed away. She was 94. The Royal House of Norway announced the news, according to infohub.kz.
"His Majesty the King has received with deep sorrow the news that Princess Astrid has passed away. The Princess died today, Friday, 11 September, at the age of 94," the press service said.
Princess Astrid was born on 12 February 1932 in Oslo. She was the second daughter of the future King Olav V of Norway and Crown Princess Märtha, and sister of the future King Harald V.
After Germany's invasion of Norway in 1940, she left the country with her mother, sister and brother: the family first went to Sweden, then to the United States, where they lived until the end of World War II. Returning home, Astrid studied political history and social and economic disciplines at Oxford.
After her mother's death in 1954, the 22-year-old Astrid became Norway's first lady and carried out representational duties for her father. She held this role until 1968, when her brother Harald married Sonja Haraldsen. In 1961, Astrid married businessman Johan Martin Ferner. The couple had five children. Ferner died in 2015. The Princess also headed the memorial fund of her mother, Crown Princess Märtha.
Recall that on 28 August, Norway's King Harald V died at the age of 89. He was reported to have passed away peacefully in hospital. After the news of Harald V's death, it became known that the throne immediately passed to his son Haakon.
President Qasym-Jomart Toqaev sent a telegram of condolences to King Haakon VIII of Norway over the death of his father, King Harald V. On 9 September, Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Norway, Adil Tursunov, attended the state funeral of King Harald V in Oslo. On 10 September, President Qasym-Jomart Toqaev sent a congratulatory telegram to King Haakon VIII of Norway on the occasion of his accession to the throne.
