Talant Kaliyev, a prosecutor from the Astana city prosecutor's office, spoke at a briefing at the Regional Communications Service about how Kazakh citizens fall for scammers' tricks, reports infohub.kz.
Kaliyev noted that scammers actively use social engineering.
"Using AI, criminals can mimic a relative's voice and claim there's an emergency, such as a car accident or other trouble, and that money is urgently needed. Older people are the most likely to fall into this trap—they think their children or grandchildren are calling. They hear a familiar voice and immediately send money to the provided number," the speaker said.
The prosecutor urges Kazakh citizens to hang up in such situations, call their loved ones, and make sure everything is fine.
"Don't rush to transfer money. In such situations, you can't trust just the voice you hear. You need to call your relative back on a known number and confirm they really need help," he advises.
