A 22-year-old resident of Ust-Kamenogorsk lost 1.7 million tenge after trusting a stranger to help with her academic debts, reports infohub.kz.

According to the press service of the East Kazakhstan region police department, the young woman filed a complaint about fraud. She said she had met a man who offered to help her clear her academic debts and arrange the necessary documents. Having gained her trust, the fraudster persuaded her to take out loans and installment plans under various pretexts, and transfer the money to accounts he controlled.

As a result, the victim suffered damages totaling 1.7 million tenge. Officers from the cybercrime unit of the Ust-Kamenogorsk police identified the suspect, a 20-year-old resident of the regional center. A pre-trial investigation into fraud is underway.
