On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Denmark, Greenland, and the United States signed an agreement on the island's security, and US President Donald Trump announced the construction of two major American military bases, infohub.kz reports.
According to NUR.KZ, citing RBC, Donald Trump said during his speech at the UN General Assembly that the US is beginning to increase its military presence in Greenland.
"No adversary of the United States will ever again be allowed to establish a military presence in Greenland or make major investments there without our direct written consent. We will immediately begin the process of increasing our military presence in relevant locations. We will build two very large military bases," Trump said.
Afterwards, the US President, the Prime Minister of Denmark, and the head of Greenland's government signed the security agreement for the island.
According to Trump, the agreement allows the US to establish permanent control over security and "all other needs" in Greenland.
"This agreement recognizes that we are a people, the right to self-determination. It also recognizes us as part of our common security in the Arctic," said Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik-Nielsen.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in turn, called the agreement "good" for the signatory countries, as well as for NATO and Europe.
Recall that earlier this year, the American leader ordered the development of a plan to seize Greenland. However, later, US Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Howery stated that Donald Trump had abandoned the idea of seizing Greenland by force.
In May of this year, US representatives began a new round of negotiations with Denmark regarding the opening of military bases on the island of Greenland. And Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that the island is not for sale and promised to defend the territory of the kingdom.
