The United States has carried out its first death sentence since the failed execution of Christa Pike, with Jamaal Howard receiving a lethal injection, according to infohub.kz.

CBS News reports that on the evening of October 7, a man who shot a convenience store clerk was executed in the state of Texas. He became the 30th person executed in the US this year and the first since Tennessee authorities failed to administer a lethal injection to Christa Pike.

Jamaal Howard, 46, was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. local time (5:03 a.m. October 8, Astana time) after receiving a lethal dose of the drug at a state prison in Huntsville.

He was convicted of murdering 42-year-old Vicki Swartout during a store robbery in 2000.

According to the network, Howard's lawyers sought to halt the execution, citing risks associated with using the same injection as in Pike's case. However, the court rejected the motion to stay the sentence.

Recall that earlier in Tennessee, Pike's execution was aborted after two doses of the lethal drug were administered: her lawyers said she continued to breathe and was alive. She was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.

Executions in the state were subsequently suspended.

Donald Trump also commented on the situation. However, he referred the question of new attempts to execute Pike to local authorities.

It was recently reported that death row inmate Christa Gail Pike regained consciousness after the failed execution.
