Kazakhstanis have received encouraging news about the water level in the Aral Sea. The water volume in the Northern Aral Sea has increased to 23.4 billion cubic meters, reports infohub.kz.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan reported that since October last year, 1.2 billion cubic meters of water have been directed to the Northern Aral Sea. Measures taken in recent years have ensured a stable inflow of water into the sea.

From October 1, 2025, to the present day, about 1.2 billion cubic meters of water have been directed to the Northern Aral via the Syr Darya River. During the current vegetation period, 14 cubic meters of water per second are entering the sea. By the end of the vegetation period, it is planned to gradually increase the supply to 100-150 cubic meters per second.

Currently, the water volume in the Northern Aral Sea stands at 23.4 billion cubic meters.

"To preserve the Northern Aral, a number of projects are being implemented, including the automation of water accounting in the Syr Darya basin and the reconstruction of hydraulic structures. Cooperation with neighboring states is also being strengthened. For example, an agreement has been signed with the Republic of Uzbekistan on joint management and rational use of transboundary water bodies, which is the result of ten years of negotiations," said First Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurlan Aldamzharov.

It should be recalled that several years ago, Kazakhstan agreed with neighboring countries on replenishing the Aral Sea. Later, the Ministry of Ecology reported that a saxaul forest would appear on the bottom of the Aral Sea.

In April 2026, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made a statement on the state of the Aral Sea during his speech at the Regional Environmental Summit.
