An attempt to smuggle a large consignment of gold was thwarted at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi: officers of the Central Industrial Security Force intercepted a foreign national who had hidden the precious metal in his underwear, infohub.kz reports.
According to Aviation Jeta, the man was transiting from Jeddah to Dhaka via the Indian capital. During a routine screening, airport security inspectors noticed suspicious objects concealed under the passenger's clothing.
A detailed personal search revealed three oval-shaped capsules hidden in the groin area. The contents of the seized items raised suspicions and were sent to customs authorities for examination. Testing confirmed that the capsules contained precious metal.
The total weight of the confiscated smuggled gold was about 1.597 kilograms. Experts estimate the value of the seized consignment at over 24 million Indian rupees. The suspect was removed from the flight and detained for further investigation.
Law enforcement handed the man over to the customs service along with the physical evidence. Investigators are currently determining whether the detainee acted alone or was a courier for an organized smuggling network.
