The International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the United Nations has spoken out against the introduction of a fee for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, announced by US President Donald Trump, reports infohub.kz.
The US intends to impose a 20% levy on the value of all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz to cover the costs of ensuring safe navigation, as stated by President Trump.
The IMO emphasized that there is no legal basis for such a measure. A representative of the organization stated: “We have always been consistent in our position on fees: the IMO strongly opposes charging for passage through straits used for international navigation. There are no legal grounds to impose mandatory fees simply for transit through a strait.”
The IMO expects clarification from the US following Trump's announcement. The organization noted its opposition to any fees for passage through straits.
