Almaty Cracks Down on Reckless Driving After Surge in Violations
Almaty is stepping up its efforts to curb dangerous driving behaviors, particularly incidents of drunk driving and excessive speeding, which have seen a significant increase. In response, law enforcement has launched intensified patrols and special operations across the city's roads.
Thousands of Violations Detected in Three Days
Recent police data reveals a stark rise in traffic offenses. Over the past three days alone, more than 5,000 violations were recorded. Among these, 43 drivers were found to be operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs and have subsequently lost their driving privileges. Additionally, 369 individuals were caught driving without the necessary permits, leading to 94 vehicles being impounded.
Speeding and Social Media Violations Targeted
Authorities also reported over 2,000 instances of speeding. The police department highlighted a concerning trend where some drivers document and share their illegal driving activities on social media. Officials have vowed to investigate every such case, ensuring accountability for those who flout traffic laws and endanger others.
Driver Caught at Extreme Speeds
In a particularly alarming incident on Al-Farabi Avenue, one driver was recorded traveling at speeds up to 250 kilometers per hour. The individual has been identified, and multiple administrative cases have been initiated. A court has ordered the driver to be detained for 10 days.
Call for Road Safety
The Almaty Police Department emphasized that reckless driving poses a severe threat to life and health. They urged all drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and to prioritize their safety and the safety of those around them.
Fatal Crash Under Investigation
This crackdown follows a fatal crash on March 21st on Al-Farabi Avenue, which has sparked considerable public discussion. A Zeekr electric vehicle reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Mercedes. The driver and two passengers of the Mercedes, aged 22 and 20, tragically died at the scene. The driver of the Zeekr survived.
The police are currently investigating this incident under Part 4 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment.
