Almaty Hippodrome Relocation Debate: District Head Urges Caution

A long-standing debate surrounding the relocation of Almaty's hippodrome has once again taken center stage, prompting a response from the head of the Zhetysu district, Lazzat Zhylkybayeva. The issue, which involves proposals to move the facility outside the city or purchase it from private owners, was recently raised again at a public council meeting.

Resident Concerns and Counterarguments

Some residents living near the hippodrome have voiced complaints about unpleasant odors, demanding the facility be moved. However, the district administrator highlighted that the situation is complex, with other groups actively opposing the hippodrome's demolition.

Call for Deliberation, Not Hasty Decisions

Zhylkybayeva stressed that a swift decision on the hippodrome's future is not advisable. "The hippodrome retains its purpose as a sports facility. Currently, it is privately owned. But before any decision is made, I believe it is necessary to hold public hearings," she stated. This approach emphasizes the need for thorough public engagement and consideration of all viewpoints.

Past Developments

In February 2025, Almaty's former mayor, Yerbolat Dosayev, had indicated that if the hippodrome's owners could not modernize the facility, the city would seek new investors or explore options for returning the site to state ownership. However, by November of the same year, a deputy mayor clarified that the hippodrome would not be returned to state ownership, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing discussions.
