Almaty to Introduce One-Way Streets, Expand Bus Lanes and Bike Paths

Almaty is embarking on a significant initiative to streamline urban mobility by redesignating several streets for one-way traffic. This strategic move aims to improve traffic efficiency and reduce congestion across the city.

One-Way Street Conversions

The city administration is considering the conversion of numerous streets to one-way operation. Key areas, particularly around the 'Tastak' market, will see changes on Brusilovsky, Turkebaev, Karasay Batyr, Kulyumbetov, and Prokofiev streets. Additionally, traffic flow will be altered on Auezov – Baizakov, Zhukov – Ualikhanov, and Radostovets streets. Further adjustments are planned for Timiryazev, Zhandosov, Manas, Myńbaev, Beregovoy, Armenian, Aimanov, and Pushkin streets.

Yerzhan Dikhanbayev, head of the Almaty Department of Transport Organization and Passenger Services, highlighted the city's commitment to rapid, pilot-based solutions. "We are actively implementing fast pilot solutions. First, we test changes using signs and temporary traffic schemes, and if the results are positive, we expand their scope. This will allow for effective improvement of road conditions," he stated. The new traffic schemes are projected to increase street capacity by 20-25%, reduce accident rates by up to 35%, and alleviate traffic load on major city transport hubs.

Expansion of Bus Lanes

The transport department also plans to establish new dedicated bus lanes along major arteries including Al-Farabi Avenue, Tlendiev, Shevchenko, Kurmangazy, Satpayev, Utegen Batyr, and Ryzskulov streets, as well as on the VOAD and North Ring Road.

This initiative builds upon previous plans to expand bus lanes, which were considered for inclusion in the 2026 work plan. Currently, Almaty's public transport system comprises 26 carriers serving 206 city and suburban routes, operating a fleet of 3,108 buses. This fleet includes 1,564 gas-powered, 137 electric, 156 trolleybuses, and 1,251 diesel buses.

Enhancements to Cycling Infrastructure

The city is also focusing on expanding its cycling network. Currently, Almaty boasts 87 kilometers of bike paths. By the end of the year, this figure is expected to grow to 125.5 kilometers. New bike lanes are anticipated on Satpayev, Masanchi, Zharokov, Zhandosov, Zhambyl, Karasay Batyr, and Kazibek bi streets, along with Nazarbayev and Abylai Khan avenues.

Development of Paid Parking

The expansion of the paid parking system continues, with approximately 17,000 paid parking spaces currently available in Almaty. An additional 8,000 spaces along sidewalks are planned by the end of 2026. However, the department has confirmed that converting courtyard areas into paid parking zones is not currently under consideration.

This comprehensive approach to traffic management aims to create a more efficient and sustainable transportation system for Almaty residents.
