Altyn Orda Market Price Gouging: Investigation Reveals Markups Up to 85%
Authorities have uncovered widespread violations in pricing for socially significant food products at the Altyn Orda market in the Almaty region, with some instances of trade markups soaring as high as 85%.
Investigation Uncovers Unfair Pricing
The Ministry of Trade and Integration has identified several businesses at the bustling market that were allegedly purchasing essential food items at low prices and then reselling them to other traders with unjustified markups ranging from 17% to 86%. Among the entities named in the findings are individual entrepreneurs 'Omаrov', LLP 'Iceberg Distribution', and LLP 'Ar Dias'.
Enforcement Actions Taken
Following these discoveries, unscheduled inspections were initiated. The results of these checks led to administrative penalties and fines being imposed on the businesses found to be in violation of pricing regulations. The Ministry of Trade indicated that inspections conducted since the beginning of the year have revealed that one retail chain, one wholesale platform, and 11 other trading entities had applied unjustified markups between 40% and 203.8% on essential food goods.
Streamlining Supply Chains
Further inspections by a regional commission at the Altyn Orda market involved 13 trading entities. A key outcome of this review was the removal of 7 inefficient intermediaries from the supply chain, aiming to reduce price inflation.
Analysis of Electronic Invoices
An analysis of electronic invoices obtained from state revenue bodies also brought to light violations among several large trading entities involved in the sale of socially important food products, suggesting a broader issue within the market's pricing mechanisms.
