Astana's LRT Project Renamed 'Tarlan-Astana' by City Deputies
The Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Astana has officially been renamed 'Tarlan-Astana'. The decision was made by city council deputies during a recent session, marking a shift away from the previous, more technical designation.
New Name Chosen After Public Input
The renaming process involved public consultation, with residents submitting several suggestions for the project. Names like 'Sunkar', 'Lashyn', 'Aspan', and 'Tarlan' were among the proposals. Following extensive discussion, deputies opted for 'Tarlan-Astana'.
According to Deputy Bauyrzhan Kasymbergebayev, the name was proposed by the city's onomastics commission. "This name was proposed by our city's onomastics commission. We considered several suggestions that came from city residents. Today, the decision was made to name the LRT 'Tarlan-Astana'," he stated.
Rationale Behind the Change
Deputies explained that 'LRT' is merely a technical term for a mode of transport. Many countries give their light rail systems distinct, locally resonant names. The aim is to adopt a similar approach in Astana.
"We wanted the LRT in our Astana to be called by a name that would leave a good impression on tourists and guests. The new name is intended to connect the project with our country," Kasymbergebayev elaborated.
While acknowledging the project's long and sometimes controversial history, deputies emphasized that the primary goal of the renaming is to enhance the project's image. The LRT project, which officially launched on May 16, is set to feature 18 stations connecting key business centers and residential areas across the city.
