Atyrau has taken a significant step forward in managing urban mobility with the modernization of its traffic control system. A total of 78 intersections have been equipped with advanced 'smart' traffic lights, which are set to become fully operational on March 12th.

Intelligent Traffic Management

The core innovation of this new system lies in its integration of artificial intelligence. These smart traffic lights analyze real-time traffic conditions by processing data from motion sensors and video cameras. This allows them to dynamically adjust signal timings independently, optimizing traffic flow.

According to Yerkenaz Kalizhan, the press secretary for the city administration, the system is designed not only to alleviate congestion but also to significantly reduce the number of road accidents.

Prioritizing Emergency Services

A key feature of the project is its focus on ensuring swift passage for emergency vehicles. The new system can rapidly change traffic light phases to guarantee that ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars can navigate intersections without delay.

Scalability and Future Plans

To achieve optimal traffic management, the system's database has been populated with over 160,000 parameters. Looking ahead, there are plans to expand the network of smart traffic lights in Atyrau to as many as 600, all connected to a single, centralized control center.
