Borussia Dortmund Defender Niklas Süle Announces Retirement at 30 Due to Injury
Borussia Dortmund defender Niklas Süle has announced he will retire from professional football following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. The decision comes after a career marked by significant achievements but also by recurring injury setbacks.
Injury Forces Career Change
Süle, 30, had been contemplating his future for some time, but a recent knee injury sustained during a match against Hoffenheim in the 30th round of the German championship proved to be the catalyst for his final decision. While initial fears of a torn cruciate ligament were not confirmed, the experience profoundly impacted the player.
"When I heard the good news, it became 1000 percent clear to me that everything was over," Süle stated. "For me, it was better to enjoy life, to have freedom, to spend time with my children and to travel, rather than living with the thought of tearing my ligaments for the third time."
A Decorated Career
Süle began his career at Hoffenheim before moving to Bayern Munich in 2017. During his five years in Munich, he played 171 matches, secured five Bundesliga titles, and was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2020.
Two years later, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund, helping the club reach the Champions League final in 2024, though they were ultimately defeated by Real Madrid.
Internationally, Süle has earned 49 caps for the German national team. He participated in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, as well as the UEFA Euro 2021 tournament, and was part of the squad that won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017.
